Established in 1817, Presidency College (now Presidency University) in Kolkata is one of India's most prestigious and historic institutions. Originally founded as Hindu College, it was renamed Presidency College in 1855 and became a beacon of liberal arts and science education in colonial India.
Over the decades, the college produced legendary alumni including Swami Vivekananda, Satyendra Nath Bose, Amartya Sen, and many other freedom fighters, scientists, and scholars. In 2010, it was upgraded to a full-fledged university — Presidency University — but it still retains its old-world academic legacy and excellence.
The campus is located in the heart of Kolkata on College Street, an iconic education hub also known as "Boi Para" (Book Lane). Its colonial-era buildings, academic heritage, and intellectual culture continue to make it a top choice for students across India.
Presidency is known for its rigorous academics, merit-based admissions through the Presidency University Bachelor’s Degree Entrance Test (PUBDET) and Presidency University Master’s Degree Entrance Test (PUMDET), and its commitment to research, social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences. It provides excellent faculty support, research guidance, and student opportunities through tie-ups with top institutions and a highly active alumni network.
